Periodontal Disease

When it comes to having an overall healthy smile, it is important to keep your teeth and that which holds them healthy. Your jawbones and gum tissue are responsible for holding your teeth firmly into their place, without them being healthy, your teeth will fall out. At Laurence Palmer DD we recommend and encourage all of our Ogden, Utah patients to take excellent care of their teeth at home and stay up to date with their in-office professional cleanings.

Due to the failure to keep teeth clean, plaque and tartar buildup can cause an infection and start the periodontal disease. At the beginning of the periodontal disease, we diagnose gingivitis.

Gingivitis

The first few signs of gingivitis are constant swelling and bleeding of a certain area of the gums. This can bring a lot of pain and discomfort for the patient experiencing it. At this stage of periodontal disease, we can treat it with a couple of professional cleanings and education on how to better perform at-home oral care so the disease doesn’t come back.

We highly urge our patients that once they start noticing signs of periodontal disease or gingivitis they come to see us immediately. If gingivitis isn’t taken care of immediately, the plaque and tartar have time to build up more and infect lower than the gumline.

Advanced Stages of Periodontal Disease

If gingivitis was not treated right away, the gum line can start to deteriorate receding down the root of the tooth to the jawbone. When this happens, there is a huge risk of tooth loss and tissue loss.

With advanced periodontitis, we do everything we can to treat it and save tissues and your teeth. For treatments we offer:

  • Scaling: removing plaque and tartar buildup with sharp dental instruments.
  • Root Planing: removing the buildup from the root of the tooth constantly to promote tissue healing.
  • Gum Grafting: replacing old dead gum tissue with healthy tissue to save a tooth

At Laurence Palmer DDS, periodontal disease is not taken lightly due to all the damage that it can cause to your teeth and tissues and even your overall health. People with periodontal disease have the risk of experiencing a stroke, heart issues, and diabetes. We want all Ogden, Utah residents to know that we will do everything in our power to help cure periodontal disease.
